Carol Matusicky Prize in Family Studies
“A $400 prize has been endowed by family, friends, and colleagues in honour of Dr. Carol Matusicky’s tenure as Executive Director of the B.C. Council for Families. The award is offered to a student in Family Studies and is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Arts.”
This prize will be automatically be awarded to the undergraduate student minoring in Family Studies with the highest GPA, and does not exclude the winning student from applying to and winning either the BC Home Economics Scholarship or the Family Studies Graduating Prize.
Deadline to apply: No application is required.
BC Home Economics Scholarships Foundation’s Evelyn Kerr Memorial Scholarship
“A $1,100 scholarship has been endowed by the British Columbia Home Economics Association Scholarships Foundation in memory of Evelyn Kerr, a well-respected home economics teacher in British Columbia. The award is made to a student entering fourth year in a B.A. program. The student must have completed courses with a focus on the family, and plan to pursue family life education or home economics/family studies teaching.”
This prize is open to an undergraduate student in any major with a minor in Family Studies. Invited students (based on GPA standing) are required to submit the following documents to be considered for the prize:
- A two-page CV/resume.
- A 500-word document discussing their motivation for pursuing a minor in FMST, career plans, career experiences related to family, and demonstrated dedication to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Deadline to apply: Early September. Students are eligible for either the BC Home Economics Scholarship OR the Family Studies Graduating Prize, but are welcome to apply for both.
Family Studies Graduating Prize
“A $1,350 prize has been endowed by the Department of Sociology for an outstanding fourth-year graduating student in Family Studies minor who has achieved high academic standing. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Sociology.”
This prize is open to undergraduate students majoring in Sociology and minoring in Family Studies. Invited students (based on GPA standing) are required to submit the following documents to be considered for the prize:
- A two-page CV/resume.
- A 500-word document discussing their motivation for pursuing a minor in FMST, outlining 1-3 major contributions to their application of FMST knowledge (e.g., TA, RA, Internship, Volunteer or Project experience) and demonstrated dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Deadline to apply: Early March. Students are eligible for either the BC Home Economics Scholarship OR the Family Studies Graduating Prize, but are welcome to apply for both.
Scholarship Requirements
In order to be eligible for an undergraduate scholarship and other academic awards, students at UBC must meet the following general requirements:
- A student must be registered in a minimum of 24 credits for the Winter Session (September-April) in which the scholarship/award is being awarded.
- If a student is in their final year of study and needs fewer than 24 credits in order to graduate, they may still be eligible for the scholarship/award even if they do not meet the 24-credit enrollment minimum described above.
- Unless otherwise stated, scholarships/awards are tenable only at UBC, and are only open to students studying in the Winter Session (September-April).
- Scholarships/awards granted for recognition of achievement in a specific faculty or discipline, or intended for students studying in a specific program, are normally conditional upon the recipient continuing studies in that same faculty or program the following year.
