Professional Development
Every year the Department offers a series of professional development workshops which are specially intended for students who wish to prepare for an academic career but are open to all graduate students in the Department.
Workshop topics can include:
- teaching, such as class dynamics, evaluation and marking pedagogy, creating a teaching portfolio, designing a course and creating course outlines;
- research, such as preparing grant applications and developing writing strategies;
- dissemination of research, such as making formal presentations and publishing in books and journals, and
- academic job searches, such as preparing a curriculum vitae, preparing a cover letter and giving a job talk.
Graduate Student Council of Sociology
The Graduate Student Council of Sociology (GSCS) promotes the interests of sociology graduate students, both individually and collectively, and fosters a sense of community among sociology graduate students.
