Bio

I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. I obtained my degrees from Duke University (Sociology, 2015), Peking University (Demography, 2008) and Jinan University (Computer Science, 2005), respectively. I am also a research fellow affiliated with the Population & Health Research Centre at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan, China) and the Institute for Empirical Social Science Research (IESSR) at Xi’an Jiaotong University (Xi’an, China). I was a PARISS fellow at Duke University (2013-2014), a recipient of the 2016 Junior Scholar Grant from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, and am currently a recipient of the 2019-2020 China Program International Fellowship from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. As the co-PI, I coordinate the Big Data and Computational Social Science Research Cluster at UBC. You can find my CV here: Qiang Fu CV_Jan 2019

PS, if you would like to know how to pronounce my given name, it is pronounced as tsiang and you can also check this Youtube link . Frankly, either kiang or quiang is OK as well since I am used to these and I don't really care.

Research Topics

Urban Studies, Health, Demography, Social Capital, Chinese Communities, Machine Learning, Statistics

Research Interests

My current research involves:

  1. a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective on institutional changes, social capital and urban (mental) health;
  2. temporal analysis in social science research;
  3. child and youth well-being;
  4. developing machine-learning algorithms/tools in survey methodology, demography, and text & data mining.
