About

Allison Laing is a PhD student at UBC Sociology

Research

Before returning to academia, I worked for many years with people who use drugs in Vancouver, first for social housing and harm reduction services and then for several research projects within the community. Motivated by a belief that community-based strategies can be crucial mediators of social and health outcomes within marginalized populations,  my research interests center around socio-economic marginalization and substance use. Specifically, I am interested in income generation and financial management strategies in marginalized communities and how social policies, such as Income Assistance, can mitigate or exacerbate harms associated with poverty among people who use drugs.

Teaching Experience

SOCI 387 : Drugs and Society
