Watch Distinguished Speaker Arlie Hochschild’s talk on bridging the political divide in the United States

Berkley Sociology professor emerita Dr Arlie Hochschild kicked off our 2020/2021 Distinguished Speaker Series on September 8, 2020, with a talk presented remotely at UBC Sociology. Watch the talk and Q&A below.

The Political Divide and How to Bridge it: notes from the field

Arlie R. Hochschild (Professor Emerita, Berkeley Sociology)

In this talk, Hochschild recounts her journey into Trump’s heartland — in the poor, environmentally devastated, largely evangelical and Catholic Louisiana. The elite of the left behind, as she calls them, Trump’s base, hold to a “deep story” and the left has their (our) deep story too. How is each side poised to deal with the fast-approaching election? And what can be done to bridge the divide?
