UBC Sociology undergrads Ben Lum and Eman Alsulaiti bagged first place at City Studio’s Hubbub Conference 2021 for their project called Vancouver Plan: Youth Outreach Design.
The project, which is aimed at countering political inequities in the city, is an outreach event that would give youth a platform through which they could directly contribute their voice to the meetings and decisions at Vancouver City Hall.
“We were thrilled to have our efforts recognised by the judges! Interestingly, although we were preparing to present at Hubbub, winning first place wasn’t on our radar as much as it was our goal to simply present an actionable project that we were proud of. Because of being physically far from campus, or perhaps due to the project’s scope, it took on a life of its own. In other words, I wasn’t working towards a grade; instead, each increment of work towards the project was rewarding in itself,” says Alsulaiti.
