“Global Citizens at Home and Abroad: Investigating the Effectiveness of Study-Abroad and Local Field School Education Programs”

In collaboration with Sylvia Berryman (Philosophy) and Alexia Bloch (Anthropology), Thomas Kemple will investigate the impact and effectiveness of two summer study programs on participating students and community partners: the Global Citizenship Term Abroad in Guatemala (GCTA) and the Urban Ethnographic Field School in Vancouver (UEFS, formerly IVEFS), both of which have been in operation at UBC since 2010. Where GCTA combines the empirical philosophy of ethical dilemmas concerning global poverty with social theories of civil society initiatives in Guatemala, UEFS emphasizes the institutional ethnography of community organizations and diverse ethnic communities in Vancouver. Drawing on well-established literatures in Sociology, Philosophy, and Anthropology, this research uses the ‘classroom-in-the-field’ as an empirical site for observing, comparing, and assessing study programs designed to engage education for ‘global citizenship.’ What are the short-term and long-term learning outcomes of these experiences?
