“The Roots of Social Trauma: Collective, Cultural Pain and Its Consequences” was the fourth-most downloaded article from Society and Mental Health in 2024, with 6,843 downloads.
The article lays out a theory of social trauma that brings together collective and cultural trauma, highlighting their similarities and differences and uniting them by grounding them in the neuroscience of social pain.
Professor Abrutyn’s article “Morality, Affect, and Reputation in the Making of a Motivated Social Self,” co-authored with Jienian Zhang, made the top-10 list for Sociological Theory.
The paper addresses sociology’s difficulty with incorporating affect into models of the self by distinguishing between the conventional sociological understanding of Goffman’s self as cynical and masked and an alternative theory of self that treats self and situation not as one-sided but as mutually constitutive.
