The Department of Sociology is proud to announce that Lindsey Richardson, Assistant Professor in the department and a Research Scientist with the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, has been recognized by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) with a New Investigator Award. The prestigious and competitive salary award will support Dr. Richardson’s research activities over the next five years.
The award acknowledges Dr. Richardson’s research program focusing on the determinants and health consequences of socio-economic marginalization among people who use illicit drugs. Dr. Richardson’s research features a social-structural randomized controlled trial (RCT) testing whether altering the timing of social assistance distribution reduces harms associated with increased drug use on government cheque issue days. Dr. Richardson is additionally partnering with an emerging program of addictions RCTs to explore considerations of medical research participation specific to socio-economically marginalized people who use illicit drugs. The CIHR New Investigator Award recognizes the innovation and potential impact of Dr. Richardson’s research.
