Congratulations to UBC Sociology PhD alum Mark Stoddart, who was recently elected to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists!

Dr. Stoddart completed his PhD at UBC in 2008 under the supervision of Professor David Tindall and he is now a Professor in the Sociology department at Memorial University.

Dr. Stoddart’s research focuses on eco-politics, social movements, and environmental governance in relation to climate change, oil and energy, and tourism development. His ground-breaking research has contributed to the study of the sociology of climate change for over a decade.

His landmark book, Industrial Development and Eco-Tourisms: Can Oil Extraction and Nature Conservation Co-Exist?, explores how coastal societies can navigate relationships between resource extraction and nature-based tourism in the context of climate change and social-ecological well-being.
