MA students Daniel Hwang and Yifei Yu receive the BPOC Graduate Excellence Award

Congratulations to MA students Daniel Hwang and Yifei Yu, who have both received the BPOC Graduate Excellence Award by the Dean of Arts.

The award recognizes excellence in research and scholarly performance by BPOC graduate students and is intended to address systemic barriers they experience in their training.

Daniel joined UBC Sociology this year from Manitoba, where he completed an honours undergraduate degree in Sociology at the University of Manitoba. He is supervised by Dr. Aryan Karimi and his research interests include health, race, ethnicity, and migration.

Yifei also joined the MA program this September after completing their undergraduate studies in Sociology at McGill University. They are supervised by Dr. Yue Qian and their research interests focus on women’s work-family conflicts, and specifically, how women make decisions regarding fertility within broader cultural contexts and the ways in which gender identities are being constructed.
