Sherman Chan, Director of Family and Settlement Services at MOSAIC, and Dr. Amira Halperin, UBC Department of Sociology, partnered in 2018 – 2019 academic year. MOSAIC is one of the largest settlement organizations in Canada. In 2020, they will present for the second time in a row at Metropolis Canada Conference: “Renewing Canada’s Commitment to Immigration”, March 2020, Manitoba.
Together with David Hickey, Director General, Communications, at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Sherman Chan and Amira Halperin, presented their research at the International Metropolis Conference, June 2019. They talked about integration of refugees to Canada through Media and Technology, and presented the overview of ‘Equal Press’ project.
Amira works with MOSAIC teams of Specialized and Innovative Programs and Family and Settlement Services on ‘Equal Press’ project, to promote gender equality in news media and create awareness of best practices for reporting on gender-based violence. Their work includes media training workshops for refugees and experts working with newcomers and refugees, development of resources for journalists and students, facilitating conferences with UBC students and scholars, MOSAIC, and the community, and engaging UBC students with MOSAIC work.
Sherman Chan and Amira Halperin have developed their research project in the last year. They will talk about their findings in Metropolis Canada Conference, March 2020. In their session: “Integration of Refugees to Canada: Cyber Security, Fake News and Disinformation”, they will highlight the multiple aspects of technological disruption, and the impact on social integration and politics.
MOSAIC has a genuine in this topic, as Sherman Chan says: ” The cyber-security threats that vulnerable groups are facing, is a major issue of concern”.
