Congratulations to UBC Sociology student Ella Kim Marriott who has been awarded the Kaspar Naegele Memorial Prize in Sociology.
The Kaspar Naegele Memorial Prize was endowed by Robert (B.A.’60) and Judith Doll (M.A.’94) and former students, friends, and colleagues in memory of Dr. Kaspar Naegele, a caring and inspirational teacher and renowned scholar who served as Professor of Sociology from 1954 to 1965 and the Dean of Arts (1964 – 1965). The award is offered to an undergraduate student in the honours or majors program in Sociology and is made on the recommendation of the Department of Sociology.
Ella Kim Marriott is graduating with an Honours major in Sociology and a minor in Environment and Society. In September, she will be attending the University of Alberta for the Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology Masters program. She loves that the field of sociology allows her to explore the intersection between social justice and environmentalism. During her time at UBC, she spent two years as an editor for the sociology undergraduate journal Sojourners and in her last year was the Co-Editor-in-Chief. In addition, she was a TA for eight sociology/family studies courses, was the Co-Chair of the UBC Student Environment Centre, and off-campus volunteered, taught, and researched for organizations such as BCCIC and Greenpeace. She is so honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Kaspar Naegele Memorial Prize and wants to thank all of her professors and the sociology department office staff for providing her with a truly exceptional undergraduate experience.
