Catherine Corrigall-Brown’s overarching research agenda bridges the subfields of social movements, political sociology, and social psychology (particularly the study of identity).

This research is the basis of her first book, Patterns of Protest (Stanford University Press, 2012), two edited special issues of the American Behavioral Scientist, and articles that have appeared in journals such as Social Forces, Sociological Perspectives, the International Journal of Comparative Sociology, the Canadian Review of Sociology, the Journal of Civil Society, Social Movement Studies and Mobilization.

Catherine Corrigall-Brown is currently completing final edits to her second research monograph, Keeping the March Alive (Under Contract, New York University Press). This book compares 35 Indivisible groups in 10 US cities that were founded right after the first Women’s March in 2017. She follows these groups for 2 years in order to understand what explains how groups mobilized and which groups were able to survive over time. This comparative analysis allows for a better understanding of how groups respond to their local contexts when making decisions about how and when to mobilize. This research was funded by a 2018 SSHRC Insight Grant.

In addition, Dr. Corrigall-Brown is a member of a collaborative team examining funding for social movements in Canada from a historical and regionally comparative perspective, which was funded by the SSHRC Insight Grant in 2014.

She is completing the third edition of an introductory sociology textbook with Oxford University Press, Canada to be released in 2022, entitled Imagining Sociology: An Introduction with Readings. An American version of this text, Imagining Society: An Introduction with Readings, was published with SAGE in 2019, with a second edition forthcoming in 2022.

In recognition of these achievements, Dr. Corrigall-Brown was awarded the inaugural Early Investigator Award from the Canadian Sociological Association in 2013. This award honors the top scholar in Sociology 10 years out from their PhD in Canada. She also received the Killam Faculty Teaching Prize for outstanding teaching in 2017.

Dr. Corrigall-Brown is also an active member of the broader sociological community. She is a deputy editor of the social movements journal, Mobilization. She recently completed a term as the elected chair of the Peace, War, and Social Conflict Section of the American Sociological Association and has sat as an elected council member of the Collective Behavior and Social Movements section at ASA.

She is currently head of the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia.
