Professor Emeritus Yunshik Chang passes away.

The Department of Sociology is saddened to report that Professor Emeritus Yunshik Chang passed away, October 5^th, 2018.  Prof. Chang joined the department (then Anthropology & Sociology) as an Assistant Professor in 1966. Professor Chang was an expert in Korean Studies, researching development and social change, rural community, the individual in the community, and folk religion. Even at 82 years of age and long after his retirement, Prof. Chang could be found in his office on campus, conducting research and working on his newest publications.  In fact, Prof. Chang’s latest book, “The Personalist Ethic and the Rise of Urban Korea,” was just published earlier this year. While he will be remembered by colleagues and his Sociology family for his impressive scholarship including an inspiring work ethic continuing many years after retirement, he will also be sorely missed for his incredible warmth and kindness.  He leaves behind a wife, Sungbon Chang, and daughter, Heejune Chang.
