2025 PROSE Awards: Profs. Seth Abrutyn and Amin Ghaziani announced as finalists

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) recently announced the 101 Finalists and 37 Category Winners for the 49th Annual PROSE Awards honouring professional and scholarly works published in 2024.

Two UBC Sociology faculty members were named as finalists in the category of Cultural Anthropology and Sociology.

Professor Seth Abrutyn was honoured for his book Life Under Pressure: The Social Roots of Youth Suicide and What to Do About Them, co-written with Dr. Anna S. Mueller of Indiana University. The book offers an in-depth look at why youth suicide clusters happen and how to stop them, drawing on insights into suicide contagion gathered through years of field work in a small U.S. community which the book calls Poplar Grove.

Professor Amin Ghaziani was also honoured for his book Long Live Queer Nightlife: How the Closing of Gay Bars Sparked a Revolution. Drawing on Ghaziani’s experiences at underground parties in London and over one hundred interviews, Long Live Queer Nightlife explores how queer, trans and racial minorities are replacing traditional nightlife with radically inclusive parties.
